Uniformed Services Day 2024: A Remarkable Success in Bexleyheath
Bexleyheath celebrated a highly successful Uniformed Services Day this year, thanks to the incredible efforts of our community and the support of various uniformed services. This annual event, which almost didn't happen, turned out to be an unforgettable day for everyone involved.
The event, which has been meticulously planned for nearly a year, faced significant challenges just 48 hours before it was set to begin. One of our 12-person truck-pull teams had to withdraw, leaving us in urgent need of replacements. The truck pull, a highlight of the day, was at risk of cancellation, which would have been a major disappointment for our charity partner, We Are Beams.
Community Heroes to the Rescue
In true community spirit, several individuals and teams stepped up at the last minute to ensure the event could go ahead. Special thanks to the teams from Demonink Welling and the London Fire Brigade, along with notable individuals like Andrew Curtois from the London Borough of Bexley, local MP Louie French, and Peter Marshall from The Kings Arms. Martin Cee, who not only served as the event's MC but also rallied additional volunteers, was instrumental in our success.
Stellar Support and Entertainment
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Met Police Teams, Ambulance & Medical Teams, London Fire Brigade, Royal Engineers, REME, The Signals, The Rifles, The Royal Artillery, all the Cadets, The Army Engagement Teams, and The Royal British Legion - Bexleyheath and Welling Branch. Your presence and support were invaluable.
The day was made even more special by the Fusiliers Band, whose performance from start to finish was truly amazing. A huge shout-out to Alex for his unwavering support in making this happen.
Maritime Radio's fantastic team broadcast live throughout the day, adding to the event's lively atmosphere. We loved having you there with us!
A Mayor's Involvement
We were honoured to have the Mayor of Bexley kick off the Truck Pull in Welling and later visit the team in Bexleyheath. Your involvement was greatly appreciated, and we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.
Overcoming Last-Minute Challenges
The last-minute withdrawal of one of our truck-pull teams led to a scramble to find replacements. Despite the panic, 36 heroes pulled together to move a 32-ton truck, showcasing the true spirit of our community. No volunteers were hurt, although a few extra aches and pains were felt the following day.
Thanks to All Involved
Our deepest thanks go out to Welling Town Business Associates c.i.c, Barry, Caron, Angie, Jan, and Joy, the crew from iKon Protection LTD, Rags Sandhu, JRL, all the stewards, bucket shakers, and supporters. Your contributions were invaluable, and we are forever grateful to each one of you.
If we missed anyone, please know it was an exhausting weekend, and we apologise. We appreciate and love you all.
A Memorable Day
The support from everyone who cheered on the teams, visited the town center, and donated to support Beams was heartwarming. Seeing both towns filled with enthusiastic supporters gave us all goosebumps.
Looking Forward
What a day and what an event it was! The stress, hours of planning, and efforts were all worth it when our community came together to enjoy and support such a wonderful cause.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year for another fantastic Uniformed Services Day in Bexleyheath.
Until then, thank you to everyone who made this event possible.
